FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Miriam's Center Bulletin — Yesterday's Highlights

Pittsburgh, PA — July 15, 2026

Yesterday was a full day at Miriam's Center, where two dedicated programs and an evening lecture brought together mothers, toddlers, and community members for support, connection, and encouragement.

The morning session welcomed eight mothers and their toddlers for a program built around conversation, emotional support, and structured playtime. Gatherings like these respond to a well-documented need: single mothers nationally face a poverty rate of 31.3 percent, nearly six times the 5.5 percent rate for married-couple families, according to 2024 Census Bureau data analyzed by the Center for American Progress. More than a third of single-mother households (36.8 percent) also experience food insecurity. Programs that combine social connection with practical support are one of the few interventions shown to ease that burden day to day.

In the afternoon, a second group of mothers and children arrived for a separate program offering its own tailored set of supports. Research on facilitated parent-child playgroups backs up what staff see firsthand: mothers who participate regularly are significantly more likely to build lasting social support networks than those who attend once or not at all, and peer support programs for mothers are linked to lower rates of depressive symptoms and greater emotional resilience. For families navigating economic hardship — including the roughly 2.7 million children nationwide who have a parent who is incarcerated — that kind of steady, judgment-free community can be as vital as any material assistance.

The day closed with an evening lecture from a respected community leader, who offered words of strength and encouragement to those confronting life's various struggles — from financial strain to isolation to the everyday weight of caregiving. It was a fitting close to a day built entirely around one idea: no one should have to face hardship alone.

A productive day all around at Miriam's Center.
